Stewed Pears

Equipment

  • 1 Cooking Pot
  • 1 Peeling Knife or speed peeler
  • 1 Pestle and Mortar or spice grinder

Ingredients

  • 6 unit Pears
  • 375 ml Water
  • 375 ml Red Wine
  • 1 Orange Skin and juice (or parts) optional replace with clementine, mandarin etc
  • 50 gram Brown Sugar
  • 1 unit Star Anis whole
  • 10 unit Juniper Berries bruised (optional)
  • 1 stick Cinnamon bruised(about 5 cm)
  • 10 unit Black Pepper corns bruised
  • 4 unit Cloves bruised(optional)

Instructions

  • In your Pot poor the wine, water and brown sugar start the pot on a low heat
  • Add the star anise to the pot
  • Meanwhile peel the pears with your peeling knife
  • Stir the pot until all the sugar is dissolved
  • Add the peeled pears to the put
  • With your peeling knife peel of the skin if your orange and add to the pot
  • optionally you can also ad the orange parts or juice to the pot
  • Bruise all the spices that are left and add them to the pot
  • Set the heat to medium-high until boiling then lower the heat to a gentle simmer
  • Leave the pears to stew in the mulled wine for about 15 - 25 minutes depending on your pears
  • After 10 minutes check every 5 minutes or so if your pears are done

You can add all sorts of things if you want. Swap out the Water for apple juice (or even apple cider) if you can think of more herbs and spices go ahead and add them. 
I tend to let the pears cool down in the liquid before transferring them into storage containers and storing them in the friged for usage. 
If you are making glühwine add the pears then and get them out after the guests are gone it has about the same effect. 
You could do this with apples as well, yet not all apples stain as beautifully as pears.
